Cara-Mia's Birth Story - A Midwife-Assisted Birth Centre Birth

Cara-Mia's Birth Story as told by her mom, Carina.
I have two amazing birth stories to share. Both were natural and unmedicated. My stories make me proud, not only to be a mother but to be a woman.

It was Valentine's Day 2010. I was 39 weeks pregnant with my first baby. I spent the whole day hoping this wouldn't be a silly clichéd love baby (I was single at the time). So I was glad baby waited until the 15th! At 2:00am I woke up thinking I had wet the bed, but as I got up and the water kept flowing, I knew it was time. I grabbed my bags, woke my mother, and off we went.

First meeting
We got to the birth centre about 02:30am. The midwife checked me and decided I needed to get into the birth pool immediately. Then the contractions started. At first they weren't that bad, and I joked about them. They grew more intense, but nonetheless I handled the pain very well. By 5:00am I was so tired and just wanted to sleep so I got into bed and immediately fell asleep. By 7:00am I woke up in a lot of pain. They wanted to check on the baby and this and that but I just wanted to get into the water.

My mother and the midwife helped me to the bathroom. Halfway there my knees went weak, and I could hardly walk. For some reason I got into the bath on all fours. The midwife instructed me to rather sit, and as I sat, out popped this blue little thing. I was in a total daze, and I remember my mom saying, "Take your baby." I took it and held it close to my body. We waited for the cord to stop pulsating, and when she cut the cord my mother took my baby to the room. I stayed in the bath a few minutes more and birthed the placenta. No tearing, hardly any pain.

The experience was amazing. By 10:00am I just wanted to go home. I was tired but I felt great. And so my beautiful daughter Cara-Mia was born.

Three years later Carina was expecting again. Here is her story of how a planned, assisted home water birth became an unplanned, unassisted, dry home birth: Ciane's Birth Story. Also, check Carina's blog Raising My Snoekies. (Will open a new tab.)
